Strathcona County Enforcement Services Stop Excessive Speeder

Strathcona County, Alberta – On Monday March 12, 2018 at approximately 10:03 p.m. Strathcona County Enforcement Services clocked a Chevrolet Silverado going 148 km per hour in a marked 80 km zone. The vehicle driven by a 17-year-old male from Sherwood Park was travelling eastbound on Township Road 530 (Baseline Road) near Frazer Place in Ardrossan, Alberta.

Demerits for speeding range from two points (exceeding the posted limit by less than 15 km/h) to six points (exceeding the posted limit by more than 50 km/h).

Strathcona County Traffic Safety Strategic Plan specifically addresses speed as the primary cause of serious injuries on our roads. The faster a vehicle travels, the less time you have to react, not to mention the increase in forces on the human body in a collision at high speeds. Last year 73 individuals were injured on the roads in Strathcona County while six lost their lives.

The Strathcona County RCMP, Strathcona County RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit and Strathcona County Enforcement Services is committed to ensuring the safety of motorists throughout Strathcona County. Enforcement of traffic laws that target high risk driving behaviours will continue throughout the year in order to reduce the number of serious injury and fatal collisions.

Safe driving tips:

·        Speeding reduces your reaction time, and the faster you go, the longer it takes to stop.

·        Speed is one of the most frequently cited contributing factors in police-reported collisions.

·        Speed reduces your reaction time, heightening your risk of being involved in a collision if you need to brake suddenly.

·        Being more realistic about travel times can reduce your risk of getting in a collision as well. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination so you don't feel the need to rush.

·        Speed limits are intended for optimal conditions. The speed you're going should be relative to the road and weather conditions.
