Sherwood Park, Alta. – The Strathcona County RCMP are currently investigating two suspicious fires that occurred within the same week in Sherwood Park, Alta.
On April 27, 2021 at 5:56 a.m., RCMP and Strathcona County Fire responded to a deck fire at a residence on Charlotte Way in Sherwood Park. The homeowner located a small fire on the lower back deck after the fire alarm went off. The fire was extinguished with a garden hose and no injuries were reported. RCMP Police Dog Service attended to assist with the investigation.
On May 2, 2021 at 3:24 a.m., RCMP and Strathcona County Fire responded to a fully engulfed structure fire on Charlotte Cres. Residents of the duplex were able to escape without injuries and police set up containment around the scene. Fire investigator and police continue to investigate.
Police have determined the fires to be suspicious in nature and are being investigated as arson. Video surveillance captured has provided evidence to suggest that the two fires may be related.
The Strathcona County RCMP General Investigation (GIS) is assisting in the investigation and asking anyone that has video surveillance in the area around the time of the incidents or have any information to contact police.
Police can confirm that the arson that occurred on April 24, 2021 at the strip mall on Sherwood Drive and Wye Road and the current investigations are not related.
Safety tips to keep in mind;
- Store fuels and other flammable liquids in a secure location, such as a locked shed or garage.
- Garbage, leaves, lumber and bulky waste should be disposed of properly.
- Firewood should be kept away from the house or garage.
- Place adequate lighting around your home and garage.
If there is a fire in your area, inform Investigators of any suspicious persons or activities that you may have noticed.
