Sherwood Park, Alta. – Strathcona County RCMP have seen an increase in thefts from motor vehicles throughout Sherwood Park but particularly recently in the Summerwood area.
Police are urging residents to remove the temptation for thieves by removing valuables, locking doors, and keeping their eyes on their own vehicles as well as their neighbour's.
Criminals continue to target vehicles for smartphones, personal electronics, sunglasses and cash. There is also a larger concern with items such as garage door openers and wallets left in vehicles, which can lead to break-and-enters and personal identity theft issues.
Although thieves may break a vehicle window if they observe something of value inside, police are commonly seeing that most vehicle thefts occurs when the vehicle was unlocked.
Ensure that you lock your vehicle every night to prevent theft. Other quick tips include, removing valuables from your car, using a vehicle alarm system, and storing vehicles in well-lit areas.
The RCMP encourages residents to report any suspicious activity or vehicles immediately by calling the Strathcona County RCMP at 780-467-7741.
